Jive was relying on aging data center hardware and running their applications from a global footprint of traditional data centers that had become costly to maintain and difficult to evolve. The hardware was reaching its end-of-life state and the company would need to invest heavily in new equipment across the globe.
At the same time, the company’s leadership was looking for ways to speed up time-to-market and increase scalability in order to stay ahead of their competitors.
Jive realized that moving to the cloud was the only option that would solve all of these issues.
“We needed to restart the servers physically or replace CPU fans and PSUs regularly,”
Senior Operations Manager.
Like most organizations, Jive couldn't put its business strategy on hold while they migrated their data center footprint to the cloud, and they couldn't afford any issues that would impact their customers, their user community, or their SLAs.
We worked together to identify a solution that would help them get out of their data centers as quickly as possible, enabling them to avoid costly incremental hardware investments, while positioning them too quickly take advantage of the full power of the cloud.
The goal was not only to reduce costs, but to enable their engineering teams to accelerate feature development, improve scalability, and drive innovation.
“We knew it would not be an easy task to move an entire SaaS product suite with a globally hosted footprint to the cloud,”
Jive’s Vice President of SaaS Operations.
Given the natural complexities of a product that has been evolved over the course of more than 15 years supporting a large user base through a global data center footprint, the focus of the first phase was to get their product and all its supporting components into the cloud quickly, safely, and with no interruption to customers, users, or operations. To do this, we used our expertise to target only modifications that were absolutely necessary or would provide exponential value with minimal risk.
Instantly, Jive saw the benefits of the flexibility, scale, and power of the public cloud. They had more control and more visibility into their infrastructure than ever before. In addition, thanks to our Cloud Optimization technology, they were able to quickly identify waste and optimize their cloud resources to maximize efficiency. By leveraging our optimization platform, they were able to reduce their infrastructure costs by 30% compared to their data centers.
Now that Jive was in the cloud, we started the journey to make Jive a cloud-native product. As Jive’s Vice President of SaaS Operations put it, “Once all of our customers were in the cloud, that is when the real fun began.” The team used native cloud services to consolidate and optimize the product, taking advantage of the full capabilities of the cloud.
To minimize impact, we gradually and strategically simplified the product codebase and increased adoption of native cloud services, prioritizing those that would add the most value.
Between the continued simplification of the product and ongoing optimization efforts through our automated platform, Jive’s infrastructure costs were now down by 50%, and they continued to see gains in scalability and developer productivity.
Now that we had a modern, cloud-native product fully in the cloud, we could leverage that base to build a highly-scalable, portable product. To do this, we relied heavily on Kubernetes (K8s) Cluster Autoscaling and K8s Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA) to increase the elasticity of Jive’s shared services and customer applications, while leveraging the native portability of Kubernetes.
The end result was a highly-scalable, flexible product architecture that was easier to maintain, faster to evolve, and infinitely scalable in the cloud, with automated deployments and infrastructure costs reduced by 70%.
“In the end, what we got was the most scalable cloud at the lowest cost’’ said Jive’s Head of Infrastructure. “And all of this was done without impacting SLAs or the experience of our global user base.”
